Rob Williams

My mixed media paintings are an interpretation of an obsession I have with the prolificness of our natural world. With an affinity to line, passion for observation, and a distilled ever-changing experimental process, I push myself to observe and respond spontaneously, all while keeping a Zen sense of formal balance. This comes from an inner stillness that subconsciously compiles all of these sensations and emotions that consume me on a non-stop basis.

My process is basically a layering of under-paintings made up of simple graphic elements achieved by applying gesso, graphite, ink, and acrylic washes. The merging of foreground to background creates a cohesive work that lives somewhere between realism and surrealism, tangible and spiritual. All is done through memory and no images or particular places are recreated. They are simply a collaboration of representational and abstract element. I consistently use botanical reference, striving to capture the intimate sense of the landscape in hopes of heightening the viewer's perception to where it's based on emothin rather than reason.
